Ranald ‘Red Standard’ Macdonald carries the proud spirit of Clan Macdonald, a clan whose story reaches across the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Dressed in Macdonald tartan and his navy bonnet, Ranald has the look of a Nome who knows exactly where he belongs. There is something quietly commanding about him — the sort of character who might say very little, but somehow still expects everyone else to listen.

They say Ranald earned the name Red Standard because he was once entrusted with carrying a clan banner through difficult country. When the wind caught the standard and nearly carried it away, Ranald held fast.

The story has grown somewhat taller with every telling.

Ranald insists he never let go.

Others maintain that he simply got tangled in it.

Either way, the standard survived, and so did his reputation.

One thing is certain, Ranald Macdonald is a Nome with plenty of clan spirit

The White Cockade

Look closely at Ranald's bonnet and you'll find a small white ribbon, a nod to the famous white cockade associated with the Jacobite cause.

During the Jacobite Risings, the white cockade became a recognised symbol of support for the Stuart cause. Worn on the bonnet, it served as a visible badge of allegiance,  a small but meaningful sign that the wearer stood with the Jacobites.

Ranald's little white ribbon is our own Northern Nome interpretation of that historic symbol. So it isn't simply there for decoration, it carries a little piece of the story with it.

The Story Behind Ranald

Ranald belongs to the Clan Path, where Scotland's ancient clan traditions provide the inspiration for characters shaped by loyalty, courage and a strong sense of identity.

A member of Clan Macdonald, Ranald wears his clan colours with pride. His navy bonnet gives him a dignified Highland appearance, while his nickname recalls the banners and standards that once carried the colours and symbols of Scotland's great clans.

Perhaps Red Standard comes from a long-forgotten act of bravery.

Or perhaps, as with many Highland tales, the truth has become just a little more entertaining over the years.

Ranald is not about to spoil a good story by correcting anyone.
